Community Involvment:

Trails: There may be ongoing trail maintenance parties. Please contact one of the Steering Committee members if you are interested in helping with trail work.

Saturday, October 6, 2007: Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day - in conjunction with the International Mountain Biking Association (IMBA). Organized by Donna Hasbrouck: 468-4765.

Madrona Murphy and Russell Barsh, through their non-profit research group KWIAHT are working on an assessment of flora and fauna on Lopez Hill. They are also working with teachers at Lopez High School and the AP Environmental Sciences class to setup an ongoing monitoring program.

Kelley Palmer-McCarty, a Lopez High School graduate in June 2007, turned her attention to Lopez Hill for her senior project. She set up an avian monitoring program, working with Russell Barsh and Madrona Murphy, as well as documented the issues around preserving Lopez HIll. Click here to read her senior paper..

In July 2006, Addie Rankin, a Lopez Island junior, entered an essay in the Land Bank contest "Places of Meaning: Conservation Lands and Island Life". Click here to read his essay.

Lease Signed

In June 2009, negotiations regarding the specific terminology of the lease were concluded and the 50-year lease has been signed by both the San Juan County Council and Peter Goldmark, Commissioner of Public Lands and head of the DNR.

In July 2009, the San Juan County Council assigned the Land Bank to be the managing department for Lopez Hill for a two year period after which this could be reevaluated. The Land Bank plans to issue an interim management plan, then work with the community and Friends of Lopez Hill to develop a long term management plan.

Land Bank Management Plan:

Tim Clark of the Land Bank is working on a draft management plan for Lopez Hill. This should be available for public comment and review in the fall of 2010.

 

 

Hunting and Camping:

Hunting is currently permitted on all DNR lands, but please be aware that there are many residences nearby and other users of the hill trails.

Also, please be aware that the Land Bank is working on a draft management plan and that hunting may be restricted or banned in the future.

Camping as well as camp fires are no longer permitted on Lopez Hill. Signs have been posted at the east parking area.

Camping is available on Lopez Island at Spencer Spit State Park and Odlin County Park.
