The group members are nearby
property owners, bicyclists, horseback riders,
open space on Lopez Island as we face more and more pressure
development. The members include students of Lopez School - many
of whom participate in school sponsored mountain biking and track
training activities on Lopez Hill.
We have created a Steering Committee which, now that the lease has been approved, meets on an as needed basis. We are working closely with Bob Myhr of the San Juan County
Council, the San Juan County Land Bank, the San Juan Islands Preservation
Trust as well as the Mitchell Hill Conservancy and the Dept. of Natural
Resources (DNR) and other public and conservation agencies.
STEERING COMMITTEE MEMBERS:

First, starting in May and June of 2006 with a letter
writing campaign to the DNR, and state
and local legislators we were able to raise awareness of the great
community interest in Lopez Hill. Further efforts resulted in the execution of a 50-year lease between San Juan County and the DNR which was finalized in June 2009.
Second: We published Mission and Vision
Statements to articlulate our goals and help to communicate to
the public what we are trying to do.
Third: we mapped the trails on Lopez
Hill, created a new trail to connect the public access to the
trails, and published a map of the trails. Download
Trail Map (PDF). FOLH continue to provide maps at various locations on Lopez: the Bookshop, the Lopez Chamber of Commerce, Isabel's Espresso, Village Cycles, the Islander Resort. We request a $1.00 donation for each map to help defray printing costs and other maintenance costs. [Maps updated April 2012 with new trail icons.]
Ongoing: we are committed to working with county and land bank staff in the development of a long term management plan for Lopez Hill and to deal with issues relating to managing Lopez Hill.
Check our Progress Report for ongoing activities.
Attend any meeting of the Steering Committee: at the Lopez Library
(open to anyone). See our home page for next meeting. We now meet only on an as needed basis.
